Synopsis
The Toro cheerleading squad from Rancho Carne High School in San Diego has got spirit, spunk, sass and a killer routine that's
sure to land them the national championship trophy for the sixth year in a row. But for newly-elected team captain Torrance
(Kirsten Dunst), the Toros' road to total cheer glory takes a shady turn when she discovers that their perfectly-choreographed
routines were in fact stolen from the Clovers, a hip-hop squad from East Compton, by the Toro's former captain. While the
Toros scramble to come up with a new routine, the Clovers, led by squad captain Isis (Gabrielle Union) have their own problems
- coming up with enough money to cover their travel expenses to the championships. With time running out and the pressure
mounting, both captains drive their squads to the point of exhaustion: Torrance, hell bent on saving the Toros' reputation,
and Isis more determined than ever to see that the Clovers finally get the recognition that they deserve. But only one team
can bring home the title, so may the best moves win.
Trivia
• All of the actors playing cheerleaders had to go to what they ended up calling "Cheerleader Boot Camp".
• Huntley Ritter performed the Nationals scene with a sprained ankle.
• Missy Pantone's tumbling pass during the audition sequence is the only stunt that the actors did not perform themselves.
• The cheer that Missy hears from out of the hotel window is a cheer from Kirsten Dunst's high school alma mater.
• The Advanced Chemistry textbook that Cliff is studying is not a real book at all. The PHD writer is actually the
Assistant Propmaster's name. Though not real, the book is credited at the end of the film as an actual book that was
cleared for use.
• Kirsten Dunst and Gabrielle Union were both cheerleaders in school.
• Many of the stunts performed by the teams in the national competition, including all stunts more than two bodies high,
the fly-overs, and the basket-tosses with head-over-heels rotation, are illegal at the high school level according to the
National Federation Interscholastic Spirit Association.
• The vintage rock t-shirts that Cliff wears throughout the film are from director Peyton Reed's extensive collection.
• Blaque's song "As If" appears during the Toro's final routine. All three members of the group are in the movie.
• The song that Cliff plays on his guitar is "Anarchy in the U.K." by The Sex Pistols.
• The very last scene to be filmed was the toothbrush flirting scene with Jesse Bradford and Kirsten Dunst.
• Both the characters of Missy and Cliff Pantone say "Be aggressive, B-e aggressive, B-e-a-g-g-r-e-s-s-i-v-e" which is a
quote from the Faith No More song "Be Aggressive" which has a choir of cheerleaders in it.
